Lessons learned from running a global collaborative cancer research consortia

Hear from Dr Mark Buzza, Global Director of Prostate Cancer Biomedical Research Programs, Movember Foundation, talk about Movember's disruptive approach to medical research funding and the collective impact model approach where the campaign drives change by aligning stakeholders through a global collaborative approach.

Mark will discuss how industry engagement can help drive research commercialisation and will highlight the challenges and opportunities from the lessons learned running global programs.

Mark Buzza
Dr Mark Buzza oversees a diverse $320 million research portfolio of 620 research projects across 21 countries at the Movember Foundation. He has worked across the medical and clinical research, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, not-for-profit and healthcare services and management consulting sectors and has held various senior management and leadership roles.

Mark has a PhD in Molecular Medicine from the University of Melbourne, an Executive MBA with distinction from the RMIT Graduate School of Business and is a registered PRINCE2 Project Management Practitioner. 

About Movember

Movember is a leading charity in prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention.  

From the humble beginnings of 30 men with the will to bring the moustache back into fashion, Movember was officially born in Australia in 2003. Inspired by the Mo’s ability to generate conversation, Movember successfully raised $54k for the Prostate Cancer Foundation Australia within its first year of operation. By its third birthday, Movember was established as an official Australian charity, launched its partnerships with beyondblue and the Prostate Cancer Foundation of NZ, and raised over $10.5 million. Between 2007 and 2008, 5 new international partnerships were launched in the US, Canada, UK, Spain, and Ireland, formally establishing the Movember Board. From 2010 to 2011, 7 new campaigns were formally launched in South Africa, Finland, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic, Belgium, Denmark, and Norway. Simultaneously, Movember launched its Global Action Plan in 2010 - its first directly funded project developed to accelerate prostate cancer research outcomes through global collaboration.

Over the last 7 years of immense growth, Movember has since launched 7 additional campaigns worldwide, been awarded the ‘Social Force of the Year’ award from GQ Australia, united its efforts with the National Breast Cancer Foundation Australia, and was ranked 49 out of the top 500 non-governmental-organisations globally. Through the coordinated efforts of the global community, an astounding $770 million has been raised in totality with 1250 men’s health projects funded as of 2015.
