The VCCC has partnered with Marlow Hampshire, a progressive and dynamic leadership development group, to provide a sponsored leadership opportunity for up to 10 talented researchers in 2020. Each scholarship is valued at $2,000 and the program will take place over four days with modules in April and May this year.
The program has been designed specifically to assist the transition of researchers and current research managers into effective leaders of research teams within the culture of a Research Institute or Research Group. It is targeted towards senior postdoctoral researchers and junior laboratory heads and is a 4 day program (2 x 2-day modules).
Network with colleagues from various career backgrounds
Dr Valerie Sung is a Paediatrician at The Royal Children's Hospital and says, "It was the first leadership course I had attended and I found it extremely useful and rewarding. I had the rare opportunity to spend proper time to reflect on my own career, my leadership style, plan for positive changes, as well as apply and execute them in my work.
"It was a really great program that connected me to other researchers with similar experiences but totally different career backgrounds, which was a rare opportunity. I would highly recommend this program to all emerging leaders." - Valerie Sung
Lorey Smith is a postdoctoral researcher, Molecular Oncology Laboratory at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and recently had the opportunity to complete the program. “Although I am an early career postdoctoral researcher and I found the Marlow Hampshire Research Leadership program highly valuable and applicable to my current career stage. It gave me practical advice for recruiting and managing students and research assistants, establishing and managing collaborative networks, and allowed invaluable time to reflect on my skills and values, and how these align with my current work and research vision, and identify areas to target for future growth.”
"I would highly recommend this workshop to any scientist currently managing their own research project and/or students and research assistants" - Lorey Smith
